I love Aunty Kekela! I was stationed in Hawaii in the early 90s at Schofield barracks and my ex-husband knew her son they had been in the army together. We decided to rent a house in Hauula, we spent a lot of time at her home talking story eating pu pus and listening to beautiful local music. I never learned to dance hula from auntie Kelela, but she taught me about life about marriage about children about self respect about having goals about loving myself but most of all how to love Jesus Christ. In 1993 I was baptized in alligator pond Down the street from her house and I had my reception in her backyard what a beautiful day fellowship with members of my ward and other members of other wards. She gave me her Book of Mormon.
After leaving Hawaii and returning to California I was able to revisit Hauula twice, she had moved but all I had to do was mention her name because everybody knows where she lives! She is the most positive upbeat loving non-judge mental person I know! If you need a meal a place to rest your head a place to shower and she feels that you are honest and not going to cause her any harm she will welcome you into her home with open arms and aloha!
Angels exist but sometimes they don’t have wings and are called friends!
I am also great friends with Aunty Kekela. She lives just across the street from me and is every bit as angelic as she’s always been. I will share your kind note with her. Mahalo.
