• Amusement Ink Kiosk airbrushes tattoos with non-toxic paint that dry instantly, are waterproof and long-lasting. They also offer face painting, and beautiful leather and stamped brass bracelets.

• Basin, a classy bath and beauty products shop that has been highly successful at Disneyworld and in Las Vegas, has worked with noted Big Island designer Sig Zane to create a beautiful Hawaiian ambience in their shop. Pamper yourself.

• Jaseboards: Jase Bennett started his own longboard-streetboard business right here in Laie, and has proudly made his PCC shop Jaseboards’ “home base/main store.” Go, skateboarders!

• Any RR4L — “Red Raiders 4 Life” — fans of Kahuku High sports and other area of excellence out there? Kahuku.org has set up a remote kiosk at the new Marketplace to make it easier to buy Kahuku High tee shirts, shorts, auto license plate frames, hats, bags, umbrellas and even kiddie-wear. Become a fan, too. Go Red Raiders!

• Laie Activities Center: Brett Lee, a former BYUH student who currently operates Hele Huli Adventure Center at the nearby Turtle Bay Resort, rents swimming gear and other recreational equipment to help guests explore our beautiful community and nearby beaches. His center will support guests of the new Laie Marriott Courtyard hotel when it opens this coming summer.

• Lei-Away: Purchase hand-made plumeria and other fresh flower leis — including fragrant maile, ginger, tuberose, and others — after watching them being made. The stand also carries durable kukui nut leis and bracelets.

• Polynesian Art Stand specializes in made-in-Hawaii fine art, ceramics, pottery and spectacular Big Island volcano photos by Bruce Omori and Tom Kualii that are permanently printed on metal; or hula-themed prints by Hauula-based photographer Kim Taylor Reece. Purchases can be shipped anywhere in the world.

• Shaka Shoots is where you can find and purchase the photos our camera teams have been taking of guests around the Center.

Mike Foley, who has worked off-and-on

at the Polynesian Cultural Center since

1968,  has been a full-time freelance

writer and digital media specialist since

2002, and had a long career in marketing

communications and PR before that. He

learned to speak fluent Samoan as a

Mormon missionary before moving to Laie

in 1967 — still does, and he has traveled

extensively over the years throughout

Polynesia and other Pacific islands. Foley

is mostly retired now, but continues to

contribute to various PCC and other media.
