On Monday, August 19, 2024, the Polynesian Cultural Center was honored to host one of the three paramount chiefs of Fiji and his delegation. After attending a climate change conference on Palau in Micronesia, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Speaker to the Parliament of the Republic of Fiji Islands and Tui Cakau made a quick stop —over 4,500 miles away—on Oʻahu, so that he could visit the Polynesian Cultural Center’s Fijian Village. Ratu Lalabalavu considers our village to be a part of Fiji’s republic and always treats it with respect.

This visit was an exceptional opportunity for workers at the village, many of whom would not have had the opportunity to interact so closely with an important government official if they had not met him here. Our staff worked tirelessly to prepare a traditional ceremonial welcome. Speaker Hon. Ratu Lalabalavu was so impressed that he personally greeted everyone, making this moment truly unforgettable. The Speaker also attended “Hā: Breath of Life,” and loved it, telling members of our Fiji leadership, “You do Fiji proud.”

The Center is proud to express our love and respect for the Fijian culture. We are honored by the visit of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and his delegation. Vinaka vaka levu, for blessing us with your presence!
